Bruxism2018
Synthesis in the human body is a process of creating complex structures and transmitting information through nerve impulses. In music, synthesis involves generating sound by transforming and combining signals based on specific parameters. The combination of these two systems—biological and musical—creates a new extended entity. But what happens when the flow of information is disrupted?
Bruxism—a type of parasomnia (sleep disorder)—involves pathological, involuntary teeth grinding and jaw clenching, which can lead to facial nerve damage. The artist suffers from bruxism, and as a result of the condition, the electrical signal in the nerve cell has been damaged.
The disruption of current flow in electronic systems in the form of disease connects both systems into one synthesis. During the performance, the artist's damaged temporal muscle, responsible for pressing the teeth of the upper and lower jaw, will be connected to the installation using an EMG sensor.
Two processes occur simultaneously in the artistic work: the installation's mechanisms are stimulated by impulses flowing from sensors reacting to the tension of the temporal muscle, then vibrations resulting from this movement are processed and transformed into sound and light.
Project realized in collaboration with Bastl Instruments and ADDAC system.
